Proper management of wounds is essential to promote healing, improve function, and reduce pain, inflammation, and the risk of infection. Specialized care is available to treat a variety of wounds that may be of diabetic, surgical, vascular, pressure, traumatic, or burn origin.
There are a number of techniques that rehabilitation professionals use to manage wounds. These include:
- Debridement of wounds to improve the wound environment for better healing
- Specialized dressing application to provide a healthy wound environment for improved healing
- Ultrasound and electrical stimulation to increase circulation and healing time
- Massage and tissue mobilization for reduction of scar tissue
- Measuring and fitting people for compressive stockings, such as T.E.D. hose or Jobst® stockings, to assist with circulatory problems or for scar tissue management
- Education on maintaining healthy skin and decreasing the patient’s risks for recurring ulcerations
- Referrals to registered dietitians or other health-care providers who would aid in the healing process
Black River Memorial has a certified wound care clinician on staff who provides individualized treatment to assist in restoring function.
