Witnessing Outstanding Work

WOW Awards

 At Black River Memorial Hospital, our culture encourages staff to recognize each other for going above and beyond. The WOW Award may be presented to all employees, volunteers, physicians, and contracted staff when someone has “Witnessed Outstanding Work.” Examples of outstanding work are efforts that meet or exceed expectations found in our Standards of Conduct and Mission, Vision, and Values. Listed below are the most recent WOW awards that demonstrate our commitment to serving you with excellence.

Week of 9/06/21

Kim Gjerseth, Laundry Worker; Matthew Honaker, Grounds Keeper/Maintenance Assistant;
"Friday 9/10 I went to leave for the day and found my van dead in the parking lot. After a few phone calls my dad was on his way to jump it. Kim Gjerseth was nice enough to take time out of her day to come move her car out of the way so we could attend to my van. For some reason the jump wouldn't work from my dads car. Noticing our struggle Matt Honaker stopped what he was busy doing and retrieved a jumper box and assisted to get my van started. Thank you both!"

"Patient went into respiratory distress/failure and this team went into action. Meds, IV lines, foley catheter, heart monitor, ABGs, EKG, CXR, labs, BiPAP and crash cart to the bedside. ED does this all the time and is a very well oiled machine. Med/Surg doesn't do this all the time and so perfection is a lot to achieve BUT this was perfection. Recognizing you have an emergency very early is key and Josie did just that getting Miranda and myself to the bedside immediately. Kudos to Josie and Miranda who both started life saving interventions. Thanks Dream Team!"

"We had a patient that was admitted urgently to hospice on-call due to symptom management for increased shortness of breath related to end stage COPD. Jennifer was the nurse that admitted him. The patient lived in a home without air conditioning and the warmth of his home was not helping his breathing situation. Jennifer delivered and set up an air conditioner from her own home at the patient's home. She did excellent symptom management to alleviate his shortness of breath. When I spoke to the wife the next day, she laughed and stated "he woke up smiling today."

Matt Mueller, Anesthesia
"Matt came in and did an intubation for me on the floor on a critical patient we had to send to a tertiary center. The patient was eventually discharged home from there. Strong work Matt! I was reminded because about 30 to maybe 45 minutes before his call shift ended this morning on what was supposed to be his day off I called him in again for a critical patient thinking intubation would be needed. He placed a second line for us but didn't need to intubate. He was kind, helpful, and a great team player. Thanks again, Matt."

Respiratory Care Team
"These people are saving lives as specialists in managing respiratory cases and equipment-making fine-tuning adjustments to give patients the best possible outcome. Don went into a patient's room on routine rounds who was already on BiPaP and found him in distress. He got the whole team to the bedside, assisted with intubation and airway management until the patient was transferred. This morning he got a distressed patient on BiPaP for me improving his condition and handing off to Eric and Tessa who continued to stabilize the patient's breathing. Thanks for all you do, sincerely."

Coral Jones, RN; Janessa Sedelbauer, Resource RN; Luci Hutchins, Resource RN
"Shout out to Coral, who remained calm when her patient suddenly had respiratory failure. She got help to the beside stat, stayed on top of vitals, kept the patient informed, and completed tasks quickly and efficiently like putting in an indwelling catheter and putting warm compresses on the arms for a second IV line etc. Janessa, House Resource Nurse, was informed and came to the bedside right away to work on a second line and help do whatever was needed. Lucy just came on shift and came to help as well. Great team action and patient care! Thank you!"
