One of the best things you can do to protect your health and the health of those around you is to stop smoking. In fact, tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the United States1. Because every smoker faces unique challenges, Black River Memorial Hospital offers a variety of tobacco cessation programs and services. Find out how you can get on the path to freedom from tobacco.
Because we care about each patient's health and comfort, upon admission, all inpatients are questioned regarding tobacco usage. Referrals are made to Respiratory Care for patients that currently use tobacco. There they are briefly asked about their smoking history and if they would be interested in nicotine replacement while in the hospital since we are a smoke-free campus. They are also offered materials on smoking cessation if desired.
Sessions are held one-on-one, unless you wish to have family members come with you. All you have to do is set up an outpatient appointment. Whether in the pre-contemplation phase, action phase, or maintenance phase, we will meet with you wherever you are in your smoke-free journey, and we are here for you to help you through the process.
If you attend a session, your smoking history and reasons for smoking will be discussed. Model lungs are used to help explain respiratory system anatomy if necessary. During the classes, a carbon monoxide monitor may be used to get a visual impact of how smoking has affected your body. (Carbon monoxide testing is also used during the quitting process to get visual, positive feedback.) Participants are introduced to nicotine replacement medications to help you quit smoking. Challenges such as nicotine withdrawal are anticipated and we prepare you for this and help you through the process in a way that works best for you. You will be encouraged to set a quit date and preparation for cessation begins immediately.
Helpful videos about how to stop smoking are also available for free check-out to those enrolled in the tobacco cessation classes.

You can quit, and we can help!
Black River Memorial Hospital partners sponsor the "Teens Against Tobacco Use" (TATU) program. We partner with Public Health and go to our local high schools to teach high school teams the dangers of tobacco. Then the students go into the 4th-grade classrooms and teach those students what we taught them. This has a strong impact on the 4th graders, because they look up to the high school students.
